We are delighted to welcome you to Happy Palace Grammar School. Choosing an A-level school for your child is an important decision and we are confident that our strong moral and spiritual framework and commitment to educate pupils to the highest standards will ensure that your child develops and prospers during his/her years at our school. This synopsis is aimed at providing you with as much information as possible on this successful school and its wider community.

Happy Palace Grammar School is a comprehensive school which provides an active learning environment for all pupils. High standards of attainment and behavior are expected, where each individual matters and everyone has something special to contribute.

We have introduced a personalized curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils and academy status will allow us to continue being innovative.

GCSE results are improving year on year and we are confident this trend will continue. We feel the conversion to academy status will benefit our pupils and the wider school community by allowing us to continue being a successful pupils’ school with a religious ethos founded on principles promoting excellence and achievement for all. We understand that education extends beyond the school and into the lives of pupils and their families. We are committed to involving parents in school life and by working together our shared expectations of high standards of work, behavior and appearance are realized. This unity creates a framework that gives every pupil the opportunity to reach their full potential. This outline of event will give you an insight into what you can expect from Happy Palace Grammar School, but of course the true quality of our school can only be judged by coming to visit us in person. We look forward to meeting you, to showing you our school and to answering any questions you may have.

The main building was opened in 1982. Through its long and rich history the school has established strong roots in the educational heritage of the city and continues to be supported by the people whose resources are dedicated to the enhancement of educational provision for its pupils, in the spirit of the original bequests of its many benefactors.

Students completing their O-Levels are faced with a variety of opportunities and institutions to pursue their A-Level Studies. Students and parents have to take decisions affecting the future on very scarce information. At times it is only the perception of the student on which such important decisions are made. Because all the student’s friends are going to a particular A-Level school, or the family may have traditionally sought admission at a particular school may be the basis of the decision. This may preclude a more viable option suiting the academic needs of an individual.

Therefore in view of the above, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce Happy Palace Group of Schools’ A-Level Programme to you. Our motto is ‘Hard work and Perseverance Guarantee Success’ and every year our students re-confirm that we truly uphold our motto by producing excellent results.

We have earned a reputation as a leading educational institution, synonymous with a high quality education. Providing an environment of encouragement and support to maximize our students’ academic potential, our professional and committed faculty enjoys a very close relationship with them. Emphasis on personal development and academic achievement has enabled us to maintain the highest standards which are reflected in our results. We attract students with 9 A’s, 10 A’s and 12 A’s in their O-Levels, which speaks volumes of how we are perceived. Most of our faculty members have been with the school for many years and combine professional expertise and genuine commitment to ensure our students excel academically and develop inter-personal skills to make them leaders of tomorrow.

Academically the school’s A-level results are excellent. Many of our students secure distinctions with record percentages of 95% and above. On an average 75% of our students consistently secure A and B grades. This achievement is possible because of the consistent, unwavering support from our committed faculty.

All lessons are taught in ability streams from the outset as we believe this is the most effective method for pupils of all abilities to make progress. Pupil groups are regularly reviewed to monitor individual progress. Some classes receive additional time and support in different subjects to help ensure they have reached the required level by the end of Year.

A wide range of GCSE options are available including sciences, languages and economics. These routes also allow pupils to study GCSEs in the subjects of their choice over two years and thus achieve the highest grades possible. Our intention is that all pupils, regardless of ability, follow a curriculum that enables them to achieve the threshold of at least 5 A* to C GCSE grades including English and Mathematics. This will enable pupils to access ‘A’ levels or further vocational studies.

We anticipate that the vast majority of students will return after Year 11 to join our thriving mixed form. We have a comprehensive range of ‘A’ levels and vocational courses. Students enjoy more freedom whilst accepting more personal responsibility for attendance, appearance and academic study. Close contact between staff and students is one of the many benefits that only a small school community such as ours can offer.

The specialist school movement now includes over 19 schools in the city and has been a vehicle for school improvement, a key contributor to national programmes and the leading innovator in the curriculum and school organization. Specialist school status changes a school’s culture. It breeds a ‘can-do’ attitude and an innovative approach. At Happy Palace Grammar School we use our specialist status to create a challenging learning environment. This helps raise standards of achievement with the quality of teaching and learning in leading to whole school improvement in performance. As a specialist, we provide a centre of excellence in scientific, technological, enterprise and vocational education. We encourage young people to pursue science and mathematics beyond 16, providing them with appropriate learning pathways so they develop the skills needed to be active citizens within an increasingly scientific world.

Admissions are selective so students are not ‘lost in the crowd’ but gain enormously from the personal attention and guidance that have become synonymous with our success. This also allows more opportunities for A-level students to lead the school. As a result, most of our A-level students hold positions of responsibility and achieve valuable personal development opportunities, unlike at other schools with too many students applying for too few positions. Students of A-Level First year also have special positions reserved as Prefects, Sports Presidents and Club and Society Board members and heads.

Pupils with special educational needs (SEN) are identified in co-operation with their parents. Special provision, from the school’s Learning Support Department, is made on an individual basis according to the particular circumstances of the pupil. Parental involvement, however small, is integral to the ongoing success of their pupil and we encourage everyone to participate in the association to ensure it continues to flourish.

Helping our students to become leaders and responsible citizens, our range of Co-curricular activities and Community Service Programmes bring out the talent, special skills, interests, concern and compassion among the students. Debating, Model United Nations, Environment, Drama, Adventure are some of our student-run clubs where students can show-case their talents.

At HPGS, sports play a very important role in the students’ life. Our Football, Basketball, Throwball and Cricket teams are ranked among the top in Karachi, very often winning inter-school tournaments.

A varied programme of sport is an integral element of our school. All pupils enjoy physical education as part of the curriculum under the leadership of our Physical Education department. Major sports are football, cricket, table tennis, throw ball and basketball at various times throughout the year. Badminton and Footsol is also available. The standard of football and cricket is very high, and our 1st XIs are among the best teams in the borough, regularly reaching the final stages of competitions, and winning their respective leagues.

“…the high uptake of sporting activities has a positive impact on pupils’ healthy lifestyles.”

We offer a vast array of opportunities for pupils both in and out of lessons including a comprehensive programme of extra-curricular activities which take place at morning assembly or after school. Happy Palace Grammar School has a strong sporting tradition with activities run in all sports at all levels. Through the year pupils perform in productions within the school and with external projects. There are lunchtime clubs for homework, art, chess, ICT, music, environmental education, a debating society and many other things. We have a flourishing students council force and a number of students have taken part in outdoor activities.

Happy Palace Grammar School is proud of its tradition of offering pupils a full programme of educational trips that enhance and support the curriculum. Trips range from local visits to places further afield of historical, geographical, literary, religious or scientific interest.
